The New World Foundation began in 1954, with a bequest of almost $7,000,000.

In 1994, NWF became a public charity, advising donors interested in its program priorities in addition to its own grantmaking. Since then, through donors and its own endowment the New World Foundation has distributed nearly $75,000,000 in grants.
